Start with useful measurements.

Provide chest or bust, natural waist, hip and height measurements, along with the coat, sleeve or trouser lengths relevant to your chosen design. State whether measurements were taken over the clothing you plan to wear underneath. Use one unit consistently and explain any uncertainty rather than estimating a missing figure.

Describe the intended movement: sitting, dancing, lifting the arms or wearing additional layers can change what a comfortable fit requires. Ask for actual garment measurements and the proposed ease, rather than relying only on a size label. Availability of a fitting must be confirmed.

Confirm the complete set.

Request a written list of included garments and accessories. A collar, hat, waistcoat or pair of trousers in a sample image may illustrate the design without being supplied. Check fastening positions, decorative details and any condition notes before agreeing to proceed. If alterations are needed, ask whether they can be considered and obtain the scope and cost first.

Handle the details gently.

Give decorative braid, pom-poms, appliqué and detachable accessories a little extra attention when dressing or packing. Avoid pulling on trims or using a decorative feature as a fastening. Ask how each component should be supported, stored and transported; different constructions may need different handling.

Follow the instructions for the specific garment. Do not assume that a costume can be machine washed, dry cleaned, steamed or ironed because another item can. Confirm approved cleaning and stain-handling instructions with the owner, and report an issue before attempting a treatment that could change the fabric or decoration.

Agree the rental details in writing.

Provide the dates you need the costume, including collection or delivery, use and return. Confirm the rental period, deposit, transport arrangements and responsibility for cleaning or damage before accepting an agreement. An inquiry alone does not hold an item. Keep a record of the agreed included pieces and condition so that both parties can refer to the same information at return.
